Aerial Silks for Kids: The Only Studio Within 45 Miles That Offers It

March 19, 2026

If your child has ever watched a circus performer climb a silk and asked, completely seriously, "can I do that?" — the answer is yes. And if you live in Camp Lejeune, Sneads Ferry, Hampstead, Holly Ridge, or anywhere in the surrounding area, you have a specific advantage most families don't: there's an actual kids' aerial program right here.

Here's the thing — kids' aerial training is rare. The closest aerial studio in Wilmington is adults-only. Marz Aerial in New Bern is 45+ minutes away. We're the only studio in the Camp Lejeune / Sneads Ferry / Hampstead / Holly Ridge service area where kids age 6+ can train on aerial silks and lyra.

What kids' aerial actually looks like

It's not what you see on Instagram. The first six months are about strength and grip — building the muscles to support body weight, learning how to fall safely, and progressing through inversions. The "wow" moves come later, after the foundation is built.

By the time a dancer is in our intermediate levels, they're climbing, inverting, wrapping in silks, and performing aerial choreography. By the advanced levels, they're doing the moves that make audiences gasp.

The progression — named after birds of flight

Our leveled aerial program runs from absolute beginner through advanced apparatus work:

  • Hummingbirds — Entry level. Grip strength, basic climbs, first inversions.
  • Sparrows — Building stamina and wraps. First sequences on silks.
  • Swans — Intermediate. More complex wraps, hip locks, foot locks, full choreography.
  • Hawks — Upper intermediate. Drops, advanced inversions, lyra work.
  • Falcons — Advanced. Dynamic apparatus work, multi-apparatus pieces.
  • Ravens — Top level. Performance-ready, advanced drops, apparatus mastery.

Dancers advance based on readiness, not time. Some kids fly through Hummingbirds in a few months; others take longer to build the strength. Both end up in the same place.

When kids can start

Aerial begins at age 8 with parental consent and an instructor evaluation. We say "age 8" but the real gate is body awareness and the ability to follow safety instructions. If your dancer is 7 and you think they're ready, ask — we can evaluate.

For 3-7 year olds who are obsessed with aerial, look at Cirque (Preschool Cirque ages 3-5, Mini Cirque ages 5-7). These combine acrobatics with introductory aerial elements on low apparatus, building toward the full aerial program.

Why safety matters more here than in other styles

Aerial done wrong gets dancers hurt. Our Sneads Ferry studio was purpose-built for aerial: rated rigging points engineered into the structure, sprung floors underneath the apparatus, professional-grade silks and lyra. Our director Meredith Caruso holds certifications in Aerial Silks, Lyra, and Rigging Safety.

The progression matters too. We don't let a dancer move to the next apparatus or skill until they've demonstrated the conditioning and technique for it. No shortcuts. This is the part of the program parents care most about once they understand what's at stake.

What students wear

NO jewelry — stud earrings and permanent jewelry must be taped. Long sleeves and leggings (no zippers, buttons, sequins, or metal of any kind). Black biketard or unitard for girls; black tank/shirt and shorts/pants for boys. Hair in a ponytail or bun. Arm and knee sleeves welcome — they help with the friction.

The class schedule

All aerial classes run at our Sneads Ferry studio. The current week's slots are on the schedule page. Most levels meet once per week, 60 minutes.

How to get started

If you're interested in your dancer trying aerial, book a free observation of a beginner aerial class. You'll see what the conditioning looks like, meet the instructor, and ask any safety questions. From there, an evaluation lets us place your dancer in the right starting level.

This is a uniquely strong program — and one that doesn't exist anywhere else nearby. If your dancer wants to fly, they actually can.
